Click the “Translation Tools” button at the top right of the search page to open the search term translator. Using the drop-downs, select the original and desired languages. Type the original in the left box, then click “Translate & Search” to automatically search the translated term.
Most terms can be translated or transliterated multiple ways. If a translated term returns no hits, it doesn’t always mean that person or company has no records. Try using Boolean operators to broaden your search.
If you want to conduct a complex query, click “Translate” and copy the translated term into the search box above. Edit to add search operators or other search terms.
- Watch out for word order when using Boolean operators with right-to-left search terms (e.g. Arabic, Persian). In order for Boolean operators to function, they need to stay between the relevant terms.
Diacritics (e.g. ü in Turkish) and special characters (e.g. ß in German) don’t always return matches. Try replacing the special character with a wildcard (e.g. “G?lnihal” instead of “Gülnihal”).
